Chris Russo Draws – Archive

The title of this post is a fancy way to say:

I’ve been going through my portfolio website so that I can give it a long-overdue upgrade, and I noticed it still linked to this blog. It’s been a long time since I updated here, and I’ve realized I’m just not interested in using Wordpress anymore! So I figured I should make it nice and official.

Thanks so much to you few followers and viewers over the years I ran this blog. Being an artist is such a personal thing, it feels like a big deal when anybody gives your work some of there time.

The good news is, I’m not totally disappearing! I actually have been keeping an art tumblr as well, and I update it much more frequently. In fact, I’ve just recently started posting two ongoing comics on there! So if you’re interested in keeping up with my work, or if you stumbled here somehow and want to see more, go ahead and check that blog out, too.

Hi, There!

Today is a very exciting day for me, because I have an interview!!

I’ve been running around trying to get all the art and design work I’ve ever done into one place to show, and trying to decide how to showcase the digital work I’ve done. Then I figured, what better way to do that than with a blog post? Not only do I have one place to show my work to the company I’m interviewing with, but it’s also a nice little “about me” sort of post and a summary of what I do for everyone out there that hasn’t been following me around on the internet for ages.

So hi, I’m Chris, I draw. A lot of my drawings are on my illustration website!

I generally work from scanned lineart and then color the images digitally. In particular, I draw a lot of portraits.

In fact, I’m pretty interested in internet culture, so I do a lot of animated GIFs.

Besides drawing, I’m also a designer! I don’t get to do it very often, but one of my favorite challenges is a project that lets me combine drawing and design.

I’d also love to do more editorial work. The immediate impact of a single, simple image really resonates with me.

I currently work for a publishing house, where I do book design for print and ebooks! The ebooks are particularly challenging, because we’re often working completely from scratch, especially for older books that never had digital files. I’m currently at work on a new, clean design portfolio site, but until then, I do have some examples of my work on Behance.

I also have lots of different kinds of artwork I’ve made on my own, more as a hobby than anything else.

I love drawing cartoons!

I like making woodblock prints!

I’ve dabbled in making patterns and fabrics!

And one of my absolute favorite artistic activities is figure drawing. Seriously, I will never get sick of it.

So, that’s what I’m about! If you’re interested in seeing or learning more, check out my website, my behance, or send me an e-mail at:

More than anything, I just love making things, and I’m gonna continue to make things, and post them here, and anywhere else I can. So thank you all for coming along c:

Odds and Ends

It’s been a while since my last post! I figured now would be a good time to show a few of the things I’ve made these past few weeks. Surprise; it’s a lot of cartoons!

If you’re a friend of mine, you may have heard about this already, but I recently did a bit of artwork for a friend’s Kickstarter project, called Drag Ball: The Game. It’s a really fun card game that involves lipsyncing against your friends, and if (like me) you’re a fan of RuPaul’s Drag Race I can’t recommend enough that you check it out! Here’s a few wigs and dresses I made for it.

Anyway, I’ve been job hunting recently, trying to up my freelance output, and I’ve finally gotten myself a Behance Portfolio. Besides my illustrations, it’s got a lot of the book design work I’ve done, too. Take a look!

Don’t forget that you can find me on tumblr, too! It’s not the most professional blog in the world, but it’s where I update the most frequently, even if a lot of those updates are doodles and comics that I consider a little too rough for this blog.

Geek Trivia!

I made a poster for this event for Gay Geeks of New York! I’ve been to a few of their events and they’re a lot of fun, so if you’re interested and in the New York City area, you should totally come!

New Figure Drawings

Some figure drawings I did from the Society of Illustrators sketch night last week.

Final Fantasy X Gifs

Final Fantasy X was one of my favorite video games, and with the HD remake of it and its sequel coming out soon, I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately. I made these little animations of one of my favorite parts of the game, the aeons, as a result.

Illustration Friday: Spark

I did another Illustration Friday piece this week! (Last week’s is right here) The prompt for this one was “spark”, so naturally I took the opportunity to draw a bunch of cartoon robots. It was a lot of fun! I’m hoping I can do next week, too.

New Cat Drawing

Remember those cat landscapes I made a few weeks ago? I’m still going strong.

One of these days I want to draw a comic about this cat.

Illustration Friday Submission: Voice

I’ve been meaning to submit to Illustration Friday for ages, to help myself focus on making a finished illustration. The prompt this week was “Voice”, and since I love drawing musicians so much I figured it was the perfect place to finally start!

I used the likenesses for some musicians I’ve been listening to a lot of lately. I’ve added their names in the tags for this post, but I’d like to see if people can guess who they are from likeness alone c:

Happy New Year Again!

I think this is even more belated than 2013’s New Year’s post. Oh well! Here’s a big ol’ sketchbook dump for you.

Lately I’ve been doing crayon copies of Vincent van Gogh landscapes, which has been a lot of fun. I want to do some Picasso copies next.

They inspired a couple of my own landscapes:

I think it might be fun to make a comic about this lil cat. Speaking of comics, I’ve been drawing a lot of cartoon characters:

And here’s an extremely short story I wrote in my sketchbook with my brush pen:

Anyway, this is going to be a big year for me! I’m getting ready to launch a webcomic, which I’m really, really excited about! It’s a story that’s been forming in my head for the better part of the past year or so, and it’ll be a sort of slice-of-life comic about a group of roommates with a lot of surreal horror thrown in. Maybe I’ll post a few drawings related to it later on, but either way, stick around for more news about it in the coming months.
